How to choose the best image format for the type of picture you have
There are a number of picture formats commonly used today. (.jpg, .gif, .png, .bmp). There are others, but Piccyfix only deals with these as they are the most popular.
But it's fair to say that each picture format has it's strengths and weaknesses, so it's best to use the most appropriate picture format for the type of picture that you have.
If you choose the wrong type of format for your picture, you will notice that either the quality of the final picture is much worse than it could be, and/or the file size is much larger that it needs to be.
You really should be concerned about file sizes if you are not already.. please read the Size/Resize info page if you haven't already, then come back here.
And obviously you want your photo to look as good as it could be, so it makes sense to choose the appropriate format.Below are rough suggestions as to which picture format to use in which situation.
| .jpg | For pictures with lots of colours and shading (eg. a photo) Widely supported for web pages, myspace and emailing to people | |
| .gif | For pictures with very few colours (eg. a logo, a diagram, or possibly a B&W photo)
Widely supported for web pages.myspace and emailing to people | |
| .png | Similar to .gif, slightly better. Regarded as replacement to .gif Widely supported for web pages, myspace and emailing to people | |
| .bmp | For any type of picture (eg. photo, logo), but has very large file size Definitely not for web pages, myspace or emailing to people! |
Don't forget that you can experiment with this by uploading a file then generating it in eg. jpg format, then using the navigation at the top, click on this step again(Picture Format), choose a different picture format, then regenerate it again. You can do this without re-uploading the Original picture each time.
Most modern digital cameras, webcams and cell/mobile phones automatically take pictures in .jpg format, which (for photos is obviously the best). Older digitial cameras used to take the photos in .bmp format, which is a definite no-no for just about everything. Convert them to jpg ASAP!
